Violinist Byungchan (Chan) Lee was born in Seoul, where he started studying violin at age six. He continued his studies with Taras Gabora in Vancouver, and won second prize in the Junior Division at the Yuri Yankelevitch International Violin Competition. He has performed as soloist with the McGill Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
He has attended the Toronto Summer Music Festival and MISQA, studying with members of the Alban Berg, Guarneri, and Cleveland quartets. His work has been presented by the Arte Musica Foundation, Lake Shore Chamber Society, Orford Arts Centre, Place des Arts Foundation, ProMusica Society, and the West Brome Series. Additionally, he has been featured in The Strad and La Scena Musicale magazines.
This past February, Chan appeared in concert at Redpath Hall as part of the CBC/McGill Next! Recital Series. In October, he had the chance to perform with Stevie Wonder at the Bell Centre. Currently based in Montréal, he is recipient of the 2014 Golden Violin Award and the Lloyd Carr-Harris Scholarship from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree under the guidance of Denise Lupien and André Roy. He is now pursuing an Artist Diploma, studying with Felicia Moye, André Roy, and Axel Strauss. Chan performs on the “Miller” Januarius Gagliano of 1768, on generous loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.
