A benefit concert featuring the hugely talented 20-year-old cellist Stéphane Tétreault and the I Medici di McGill orchestra will take place on Friday at St. Gabriel’s Church, 2157 Centre St. in Verdun, starting at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra is conducted by Iwan Edwards.

The concert is being given in support of the Viva! Sistema project at St. Gabriel’s School, an English Montreal School Board School in Point-St-Charles.

The project is based on a program introduced in Venezuela in 1975 by economist and musician José Antonio Abreu to give economically disadvantaged children the opportunity to make music at no cost to themselves or their families. Through the music, they would have opportunities for personal growth and the sense of being included.

The program, known as El Sistema, was wildly successful; Many children in the program became members of the acclaimed Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. Some became professional musicians, including Gustavo Dudamel, a world-famous conductor. He will conduct the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in March.

The St. Gabriel’s program, which has 22 children, was launched by the Quebec Music Educators Association in October 2012.

The goal of Friday’s concert is $10,000; the money will be used to pay program instructors, most of whom are music students at McGill University.

The concert program will feature two works by Antonin Dvoák. Tétreault will perform the Cello Concerto, Op. 104. Dvoák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, will also be performed. Children in the Viva! Sistema program will participate in the concert as well.

Tétreault, who has a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the Université de Montréal, plays the 1707 Countess of Stanlein ex-Paganini Stradivarius cello. On loan from Jacqueline Desmarais, it is one of the most valuable instruments in the world.

Tickets, $30, or, for those in the Donor category, $100, are available at the door or through PayPal on the I Medici website, www.imedici.mcgill.ca. For more on Tétreault, go to www.stephanetetreault.com
