On April 13 et 14, 2013, Tactus Chamber Choir will perform Tenebrae, a vocal ritual in the heart of darkness.
The concert is inspired by an ancient liturgy of the holy week, celebrated long ago in parishes and monasteries. The austere "Office of Tenebrae" was sung at dusk or at dawn of Holy Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Candles were gradually extinguished in a symbolically and emotionally charged ritual, thus capturing the imaginations of generations of Catholics.
Many composers used the texts of the 27 responses to create dense and inspired works, such as the celebrated Miserere by Allegri, which was sung at the Sistine Chapel, and the Lamentations of Jeremiah by Tallis, mourning the fall of Jerusalem. The Italian Renaissance composers Gesualdo and Victoria, and the Czeck Zelenka from the baroque era also put them to music, as have many modern composers. The French Poulenc, the Catalan Casals, the Argentinian Ginastera, the German Rihm, the American Toensing, the Scot MacMillan, reiterate in their art their fascination for these ancient texts. Through their resplendent compositions, Tactus will guide you where light and obscurity meet, where pain and healing are one.
