Concert of CDD: Northern Exposure

Concerto Della Donna presents
NORTHERN EXPOSURE
June 5th, 2012, 8 p.m., Montreal

May 7, 2012 – Concerto Della Donna, Montrealʼs award-winning womenʼs choir, is pleased to present “Northern Exposure,” a unique presentation of sound, storytelling, image and dance from Canada, Denmark, Finland and Norway, featuring the world premiere of East of the Winds by composer Marie-Claire Saindon, guest musicians Caroline Chehade (violin), Michael Nicolas (cello), and choreographer, Katie Ward. Proceeds from the concert will be shared equally between Concerto Della Donna and the Batshaw Alumni Association, created to support and complement the publicly funded services of Batshaw Youth and Family Centres. The Batshaw Foundation supports programs in higher education, assisted youth, and families in crisis.

Concerto Della Donna is a dynamic group of 17 female singers based in Montreal, Quebec. Its repertoire is drawn from both secular and liturgical sources, with a strong emphasis on compositions and works by female composers. The ensembleʼs goal is to produce vibrant performances while demonstrating the strength and beauty of womenʼs voices through technical precision and emotional depth. Since its formation in 2001, the ensemble has won a number of CBC Choral Competition awards. It has collaborated with many notable ensembles, including several performances with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and has performed at festivals in Newfoundland, Llangollen (Wales), Croatia and Serbia. The choir has recorded four albums; the latest, Parlez-moi, a selection of works by Canadian composer Allan Bevan, was released in October 2011 The choir is directed by Maestro Iwan Edwards, former director of the St. Lawrence Choir and former chorus master of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Recognized nationally and internationally as a prestigious conductor, adjudicator, clinician and teacher, in 2002 Mr. Edwards received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and most notably, in 1995, the Order of Canada for outstanding achievements in the arts.
